As a congregation, we are very supportive of community outreach efforts. Jesus taught that we are called to provide food, drink and comfort to those who need our help and support.

Support for Our Space
Since the summer of 2009, St Andrews Outreach committee has also been cooking and serving lunches once a week at Our Space, the Community Drop in Centre which serves the many of the same marginaized community as St Pauls' dinners.

Food and a warm space in our Lower Hall  was also provided for several days in December 2009, when Our Space was between permanent locations.

A coalition of downtown churches provides hot dinners every Sunday during winter months and brown-bag lunches during the summer for homeless people.  A dedicated group of St. Andrew volunteers fulfill our commitment to this very important outreach initiative. Church members also provide financial support through weekly offerings.

Hospice Peterborough is a community hospice that provides a range of services for people living with or affected by cancer, life threatening illness or grief.  Services include volunteer visiting, a day program, support groups and therapeutic activities held at Hospice, and a full range of bereavement programs.  In 2002, St. Andrew’s and Hospice reached an agreement that Hospice would lease our manse (next door to the church) for 21 years. Hospice undertook a restoration and renovation, with the help of many volunteers, to create the perfect environment for their administration and small group meetings. Large group meetings are held in the church. Beautiful gardens enhance both the setting and the peacefulness of the location. In December of 2005, St. Andrew’s hosted a CBC Christmas Carol with all proceeds going to Hospice.

The fourth Sunday of the month is Food Bank Sunday at St. Andrew’s. The people of the congregation bring non-perishable items to donate to Kawartha Food Share. The children of the Sunday School collect the items and bring them to the front of the Sanctuary during the family time before going to Sunday School. Some folks earmark a portion of their offering to this initiative. Additionally, the children of the Sunday School dedicate all of their offering to the food bank. One of the older children counts the money and tells all the others how much has been collected since last month. They are proud of their role in helping out and living God’s Word.

St. Andrew’s is the location for this weekly programme. Every second Monday, a nutritious and inexpensive lunch is served to senior citizens. A variety of churches provide the people to serve the lunch, clean up and organize the social and recreational activities that follow the meal. St. Andrew’s volunteers take a turn in the weekly rotation of  churches; a St. Andrew’s liaison person is on hand each week.

Each year, at our annual meeting, we set a goal for our donation to the Mission and Service Fund of the United Church of Canada. Our goal for 2011 is $20,000. This sum is raised through the contribution of individual members through their weekly offerings. Minutes for Mission are short stories told bi-monthly during the worship service to keep us informed about the way the money is spent overseas and in Canada.

Another annual event is a sewing bee at which Christmas stockings are made and decorated. The decorated socks are placed at the back of the Sanctuary for people to take home and fill for distribution to the men of Brock Mission and the women and children of Cameron House. Lists are provided suggesting appropriate gifts to fill the stockings. One hundred stockings or more are filled each year.
